Reducing the impact in aerospace

‘There is not a foreseeable solution, at least before 2040, allowing us to move away from dependence on liquid fuels in aerospace. We can’t follow the automotive industry’s example of going electric very quickly to solve issues around emissions, so what can we can in the interim?’

Simon Henley President, Royal Aeronautical Society
Simon Henley served as an Aircraft Engineer Officer in the Royal Navy for 32 years, retiring in the rank of Rear Admiral. He served as the UK lead in the US/UK Joint Strike Fighter Programme Office, and subsequently lead the UK’s Joint Combat Aircraft Integrated Project Team for four years. His last job before retirement from the Royal Navy was as Technical Director and head of Programme Management for the Defence Equipment and Support organisation. He subsequently joined Rolls Royce as Programme Director for new programmes in Defence Aerospace, with responsibility for development and transition to production of the UK elements of the F-136 engine and the propulsion systems for the Mantis and Taranis unmanned programmes. In 2010 he was seconded to Europrop International as President. He is currently engaging in interim roles in Defence and Aerospace, and represents an Australian all-terrain wheelchair company in UK and Europe. Simon is the elected President of the Royal Aeronautical Society for 2018/19.
